Chic Guide to Sitges and Vilanova
Helping you find the best holiday locations in Spain!
Sitges is a pretty, coastal town that lies on the Costa Brava, just 30km south of Barcelona. The town is full of classic art deco whitewashed buildings and has a beautiful promenade lined with palm trees and restaurants overlooking the main beach. In fact, Sitges has a total of 17 beaches that have been named some of the best beaches on the Mediterranean coastline. It is a said to be an up and coming area and now has a reputation of being the ‘St Tropez of Spain’. With 300 days of sunshine a year, Sitges is a dream place for a holiday.
The town has a vibrant atmosphere with a diverse mix of visitors. There is a large gay scene and there are many lively clubs and bars for those who want to party the nights away, but there are also water parks and beautiful beaches for families. If you are looking to enjoy a romantic getaway, the pretty town and beachside restaurants create the perfect atmosphere for lovers of every age. Sip cocktails by the beach as you watch the sunset or visit the local vineyards to arrange a tour and discover the secrets behind the great taste of Catalonian wine! There are even several museums and art galleries that you can visit in the town. You can learn about everything from Bacardi rum in the birth town of its creator at the Casa Bacardi, to the history of the Catalonian railway at the Catalonia Railway Museum!
Some of the best times to visit are during one of the many events that take place here. From the Sitges International Film Festival and the Sitges Vintage Car Rally to the Carnival and the Festa Major, this town really has something for everyone.
Vilanova is located just down the coast from Sitges. It is a picturesque coastal resort with a superb seafront and a charming old quarter where you will find the old city walls, the castle and the old bell tower. The impressive nineteenth century buildings demonstrate the splendour of the town, which today has the third largest port in Catalonia.
There are some beautiful beaches including Playa de Adarro, Playa de Sant Gervasi and Platja de Ribes Roges where you can enjoy long, relaxing summer days. The sandy beaches are clean and lined with many restaurants, cafes and small shops. Vilanova also has its own Ramblas and main square, both are dotted with quality restaurants and bars.
The town has a close-knit community of locals who show their pride in their town through the number of events and festes (festivals) that are celebrated here. The Festa Major has been celebrated here since 1784 and is the best place to see Catalan culture at its finest. There will be traditional dances, parades of gegants (giants) and capgrossos (big-headed figures), correfocs (fire runs) and castells (human towers). It is an impressive spectacle that is not to be missed! Other important celebrations include the Carnival in February, la Diada de Sant Jordi and the la Nit de Sant Joan. All of these events make a great excuse to visit, so why not plan your trip today!
