Self-Guided Day Trips

Whilst we don’t provide chauffers or guided tours to the following locations, we highly recommend a visit for anyone who wants to break through Barcelona’s mountainous border and experience more of Catalonia’s diverse landscapes and cities.

Girona

Girona is a beautiful Catalan city, located about an hour and a half drive away from the centre of Barcelona. The old town of Girona is full of galleries, museums, Gothic churches and medieval architecture. You can visit the incredible Cathedral of Girona, which has the widest Gothic Nave in the world! It also has one of the best preserved Jewish Quarters in the world, where hundreds of years of history can be felt in the tiny, atmospheric streets. You can also visit the Arab baths which are an imitation of the medieval baths that date back to the 12th century.

There is plenty to discover in Girona and so we would definitely recommend a visit. The city also sees a lot of sports tourism every year due to its impressive surrounding landscapes and of course, its status as a certified sports tourism destination. You can cycle, walk, run, any sport, you can do it! if you want to try something active then this is the place for you as there are plenty of rental places for sports enthusiasts.

Tarragona

Tarragona

If you’re staying in Barcelona for a longer period of time, then why not explore the southern region of Catalonia and head down to Tarragona for a day trip. Tarragona is a small port city with a big roman history that can still be seen today. The main sights in Tarragona are the ancient ruins that can be found throughout the city, such as the amphitheatre and the Pont del Diable, an aqueduct that supplied the city with water for 1,900 years.

There are also plenty of religious buildings including the Tarragona Cathedral and the Convent of the Poor Clares, all with impressive architecture that can’t be missed whilst walking around the city. It also has some beautiful beaches and would be ideal if you want to escape the busy city of Barcelona for the day! Tarragona is located near to Reus Airport as well as being served by Tarragona railway station.

Cadaqués

Cadaqués

About 2 hours drive north of Barcelona, you will find the beautiful fishing village of Cadaqués. This is a picturesque town at the easternmost point of Spain’s mainland. The town itself is set around a remote bay on the Costa Brava and is a typical Spanish waterfront town. It has beautiful clear blue waters accompanied by plenty of sunshine. There are several beaches nearby, some of which can only be accessed by boat, meaning they are often a lot less crowded. For a small town, it boasts plenty of culture in its winding cobbled streets where bars and restaurants can be found serving traditional tapas. Cadaqués is also famous for its famous resident, Salvador Dalí. The home where he lived from 1930 to 1982 is now preserved and used as the Salvador Dalí House Museum a museum and can be visited by reserving tickets online here.
