Costa Brava Chic Guide

This is the coast north of Barcelona that stretches up to the French border. The most known city in this area is Girona but there are many other towns that have become popular with visitors looking for a break from day-to-day life. Costa Brava is split into four regions: L’Alt Empordá, Baix Empordá, La Selva and Girona. You can escape to Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Santa Cristina d’Aro and Playa de Aro. In general, the region is filled with small fishing harbours and towns that have retained their authentic Spanish traditions.

Alt Emporda is located at the north eastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula. The most known town of this area is Figueres and it is famous for the Dalí Theatre Museum, one of Spain’s most popular. There are also many natural areas of environmental interest and beautiful places to discover. The town of Perelada is located to the north of Figueres, you should visit the town to see the beautiful Counts Rocabertí Castle. The castle has a well-kept park, library and an impressive art collection. Part of the castle has now been turned into a casino and it becomes home to an International Music Festival every year. Cadaqués is located in the Alt Emporda area as well and is a picturesque fishing harbour. You will find many towns like this where you will truly feel traditional Spanish culture; these include L’Escala, Roses and Port Lligat. If you are travelling with children then you may want to spend a day at the local waterpark, ‘Water Park Aquabrava’, which is home to Europe’s biggest wave pool!

Baix Empordá is an area that is known as the ‘region of coves’ and sits in the middle of the Costa Brava. Some ’must sees’ of this region include the beautiful Medes islands that are located just off the coast. The Medes Islands offers caves and coves of great beauty accompanied by all kinds of natural species and animals. It is popular to dive on these islands due to the diverse marine life. Ullastret is also located in this region and is an Iberian village that is considered one of the most important sites due to the extent and richness of its ruins. If you want a lazy day at the beach then we recommend Calella de Palafrugell, Tamariu, Aiguafreda, Sa Tuna, Sa Riera, Platja Fonda, Cala Castell or Cala Estreta.

The region of La Selva is home to the popular resort of Tossa de Mar. Tossa de Mar is a beautiful town with cobbled streets, an ancient castle with a mountainous backdrop of lush green valleys and natural springs. Lloret de Mar is also in the region of La Selva. The beaches and the coves are what attract many people to this area. Lloret beach, Santa Cristina beach, Treumal beach, Canyelles beach, Sa Caleta and Cala Boadella are just a few of the beaches that you can visit. You will also find plenty to do during the summer nights here as there are lively bars and clubs in plenty. In La Selva, like Alt Emporda, you also have a water park that might attract you if you are travelling with young children. It is called Water World and opens its doors from May to September, there are giant slides, rapid rivers, mini golf and restaurants to keep all the family entertained. Blanes is another town  that is aimed very much towards tourism whilst still maintaining its old world charm and traditional Catalan seaside village feeling.

Girona is the most popular place in Costa Brava. Girona is a beautiful city located about an hour and a half drive away from the centre of Barcelona. Like most Spanish towns, it has the old town and the new town. The old town of Girona is full of galleries, 7 museums (including the award winning Cinema Museum), Gothic churches and medieval architecture. You can also visit the Arab baths which are an imitation of the Medieval baths whose existence date back to the 12th century. There is plenty to discover in Girona and so we would definitely recommend a visit. Girona also welcomes a lot of sports tourism every year due to its impressive surrounding landscapes and of course, its status as a certified sports tourism destination.
